چکیده

Weather Radars provide valuable information on various weather phenomenon such as rain, hail, storm, etc that are increasingly become important in today’s scenario where disaster management has got a wider role to play. But due to the way a radar works, not only precipitation but also unwanted echoes ,that we broadly classify as clutter , which includes returns from land, sea waves, birds, insects, buildings, etc, is observed by the radar. Such cluttered returns interfere with weather products estimation. Clutter detection and mitigation play a massive role in ensuring accurate weather estimation. In this paper we present two different clutter filtering approaches viz, 1) Time domainIIR Filtering Approach and 2)Frequency DomainFFT spectral processing Approach. Their feasibility in fine grain velocity estimation is discussed and a novel technique for further improvements in Clutter Filtering Approach is suggested. We shall also discuss the loss of velocity information in certain Doppler bands experienced by other clutter filtering techniques and a solution is proposed for the same. key words: doppler weather radar, clutter,FFT,IIR

ERAD 2010 - THE SIXTH EUROPEAN CONFERENCE ON RADAR IN METEOROLOGY AND HYDROLOGY Wind Turbine Clutter Detection in Scanning Weather Radar Tasks

Wind Turbine Clutter (WTC) mitigation is a challenging issue that worldwide weather services are facing at the moment. The use of wind farms to generate electricity is growing increasingly due to the importance of being a renewable energy source. Wind farm installations relatively near to weather radars may block the normal propagation of the radar signals and cause reflectivity clutter returns...

Multi-PRI Signal Processing for the Terminal Doppler Weather Radar. Part II: Range–Velocity Ambiguity Mitigation

Multiple pulse-repetition interval (multi-PRI) transmission is part of an adaptive signal transmission and processing algorithm being developed to combat range–velocity (RV) ambiguity for the Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR). In Part I of this two-part paper, an adaptive clutter filtering procedure that yields low biases in the moments estimates was presented. In this part, algorithms for ...

On differentiating ground clutter and insect echoes from Doppler weather radars using archived data

Normally wind measurements from Doppler radars rely on the presence of rain. During fine weather, insects become a potential radar target for wind measurement. However, it is difficult to separate ground clutter and insect echoes when spectral or polarimetric methods are not available. Archived reflectivity and velocity data from repeated 5 scans provide alternative methods. The probability of ...

Real time mitigation of anomalous propagation clutter

Mitigation of anomalous propagation clutter (AP) is an ongoing problem in radar meteorology. AP clutter routinely contaminates radar data masking weather returns causing poor data quality. The problem is typically mitigated by clutter filtering all radar data but this will also eliminate weather data at zero velocity. With the advent of fast digital receivers capable of real time spectral proce...

Discrimination between Weather and Sea Clutter

The results of automatic discrimination between weather and sea clutter using S-band dual-polarization Doppler weather radar are presented. The data were collected with the NCAR SPOL radar located in the Pacific shoreline near Seattle, USA. The multiparameter dataset includes backscattered power P (or radar reflectivity Z), Doppler velocity V, spectrum width σv, differential reflectivity ZDR (p...
